Overview for Soultry | Poetry Open Mic

Is poetry a dying art form? Not really. Because we create verses everyday and use words artistically to communicate. Does that make us poets? If you have something to say through poetry, we are all ears.At Soultry, we want to re-define what poetry means to us. You are free to read, perform (Spoken Word) or even sing your original work. Language is no barrier. You are also welcome to just listen and appreciate poets and their work. Listening is the greatest reward for a poet. So bring a friend\family along this Valentine's day and use poetry to express your love.

About Mockingbirds : On a sunny April (not so cruel a month after all) afternoon of 2015, we gave birth to Mockingbirds (or rather Mockingbirds gave birth to us) in a coffee shop in Chennai when a couple of friends gathered to discuss a way to find an audience for their poetry. In a year, it grew into something much bigger, a platform for upcoming spoken word artists and poets to grow. We have been the answer to, "Does Chennai really have a spoken word poetry group?".

The name Mockingbirds is obviously inspired by To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee's award-winning novel. Our organization is built on these very lines from the novel, "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corn cribs. they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."Our mission is to inspire self, social and political expression through versification which essentially is what spoken word is.
